Hi there, Welcome to "The Real McCOY" Family History Page. And let me place emphasis on the "Real McCOY". Straight out of the hills of God's own Bluegrass State. "Kentucky". This page was created to link all the history of the McCOY's and connected families that were involved in the Hatfield and McCOY Feud. So if your interested in what really happened, this is the place to be.I am the seventh generation decendent of William McCOY, who was the progenitor of the McCOYs of the Kentucky-West Virginia border. William McCOY was the Forefather of all the McCOY's that were involved in the Hatfield-McCOY Feud. Tradition calls him "OLD WILLIAM".He was born about 1750-1755 His birthplace is unknown.I would like to thank Truda Williams McCOY for her book titled "THE McCOYs:Their Story".Her book is the most referred to by this site. The McCOYs traced their origin back to Scotland,possibly Lowland, but they had intermarried with the Highland Celtic strain,giving some a slight olive complexion and some dark or auburn hair. they were in general tall and lithe and handsome.They had a great deal of family pride and clannishness in the 1800's on the frontier of the Tug River.(my home roots) Unknown to popular belief the Hatfield-McCOY Feud began during the Civil War. Abraham Lincoln called for volunteers,asking states to furnish their quota's of regiments. He hurriedly rushed supplies and weapons to Kentucky in order to hold it, a border state,in the Union. State leaders organized Home Guard Units to keep local law and order. The men of the mountains heard the call and had to ask themselves which side am I fighting on?" Some stayed neutral as Kentucky had voted to do. Some went Confederate and some went Union. As time went on the Home Guard Units continued to exist without broad state supervision or restraint, they became lawless and disorderly bands,bent on murder,robbery, and revenge. They and other more criminal elements became known as Bushwhackers and committed such crime and sin and destruction that the people even now only say,"They caused the most awful times that ever was". A remark was heard being made by Harmon McCOY when he was asked if he was still in the Union Army,he repied "Yep, and it looks like we're goin to bring the South back into the Union in a few months too! This remark got back to Devil Anse Hatfield who was the leader of the W.Va Home Guard Unit "Logan Wildcats".His blood began to boil, since he had fought against the North. A few days after this event a shot was fired at Harmon McCOY from an ambush. Harmon decided it would be best to lay low for a while in a cave. His wife brought him supplies on a regular basis. Upon one of her trips to see Harmon, she saw numerous hoof prints in the snow."She said surely those devils have found Harmon"! Half way to the entrance to the cave she saw Harmon McCOY,s body slumped over a snowcovered log,he was dead. Blame was placed on Devil Anse Hatfield and the "Logan Wildcats.So we see extreme bitterness and hatred underlying the episode with the stolen pig.The rest is History!
